In addition to the DASH diet, the Mediterranean diet has been recommended as a healthy dietary pattern that helps reduce blood pressure and cardiovascular (CV) risk ( 13). The DASH score ( 9) was generated to assess adherence to the DASH diet, which has been associated with reduced all-cause mortality rate ( 3– 5, 10– 12). Adopting the DASH diet substantially reduced blood pressure ( 6, 7), with an additional effect when combined with reduced sodium intake ( 7, 8). Initially developed in the 1990s, the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet is characterized by reduced amounts of saturated fat, total fat, and cholesterol, along with high amounts of fiber, protein, and some electrolytes (potassium, magnesium, and calcium) from fruits and vegetables ( 6, 7). Several dietary patterns have been associated with a lower risk of all-cause mortality ( 3– 5). High diet quality is a healthy lifestyle factor that has been associated with prolonged life expectancy ( 1, 2).
